For the first time in the 86-year history of the erstwhile Bihar College of Engineering (now the National Institute of Technology, Patna), Girish Kumar Choudhary of the electrical engineering department has achieved a rare distinction of getting his research product patented.
After a long and sustained research, Choudhary has designed solar adapters for laptops and other electronic devices.
Giving details of his new finding, Choudhary said that like mobile phones, laptops are also becoming essential as they serve a variety of purpose in both rural as well as urban areas. Fortunately, the cost of laptops is coming down and they are now within the reach of many people. However, the operation of these laptops depends on the battery contained in their belly. This battery needs repeated charging.
"As our rural areas are devoid of electricity supply, this solar adapter is compatible with laptops requiring different voltages for charging batteries. Two solar panels of 12V, 35 watts can be easily added to a series to get 24 volt and power level suitable for further regulation (DC to DC converter).
Explaining the technical aspect of the solar adapter, he said, "In case solar panel, which produces electricity, is to be used for the operation of laptops, there could be a mismatch of specifications on the two sides, i.e. the solar panel side and the laptop side. To overcome this difficulty, an interface component in the form of a solar drive adapter has been designed and developed whose cost will be about Rs 1,000 only."
This adapter has been patented by the Controller General of Patents Design and Trade Marks with patent no. TOSHIBA Pa3468e-1ac3 Adapter 235642 on July 10, 2009, under the Intellectual Property, India.

Doctors at Children’s Hospital Central California are cautioning parents to keep disk and watch-type batteries away from small children. Swallowing one can have tragic consequences.
The increased use of these small round camera batteries in everything from hearing aids, fast-food meal toys to singing greeting cards means there are many around the average home. Their small size and shape, reminiscent of candy, makes them attractive to young children. “By their innocence and their exploratory nature, babies and toddlers put things in their mouths,” says Dr. Robert Kezirian of Children’s Hospital, “These camcorder batteries are small and can quickly end up in their mouths.
