Few things are more annoying than the battery low alert popping up on your laptop when you least expect it. Funny how it always happens at the worst possible time - in the middle of finishing an important document for instance or perhaps while booking those airline tickets online for your winter sun. To avoid this annoyance, read on for five ways to extend your laptop's battery life.
Tip 1: Lower the brightness
The most effective way to reduce the rate of your battery's power consumption is to lower the brightness of your laptop's screen. This is usually done via a dedicated button or the Function Key (Fn Key) which doubles up as a brightness button when holding the arrow keys.
Brightness buttons will be marked with a sun icon. To lower your screen's brightness, you'll need to press the button with a down arrow repeatedly, which will usually be next to the sun icon button.
Tip 2: Switch off Wi-Fi and Bluetooth
Another way to save power is to switch the Wi-Fi off when you're not using it, as leaving your connection on can sap Dell Latitude E4300 battery life. As with brightness controls, most laptops have a dedicated switch or a Fn Key that can be used to disable or enable the wi-fi. Check for a button labelled 'wi-fi' or one with an icon that looks either like a radio mast or like the signal bars on a mobile phone. Tip 3: Move to a better power setting
Your laptop should automatically switch to a more conservative power plan whenever your PC is running on battery power, but it's worth checking this. In both Windows 7 and Vista, click Start, type Power Options and click the Power Options entry that appears. If the High Performance option is selected, change this to Balanced. The Power Saver option will reduce ACER Aspire 6920 battery usage further, but may affect overall performance. In Windows XP, similar options can be found by going to Start > Control Panel > Performance and Maintenance > Power Options.

Tip 4: Further Adjust Power Options
In Windows 7 and Vista, click Start, type Power Options and then press Enter. Click the Change plan settings link next to your chosen power scheme, then choose shorter periods of time from the Turn off the display and Put the computer to sleep dropdown menus. Click on Change advanced power settings to fine-tune power settings further still. You could, for example, click the plus sign next to the Hard disk entry, then click the plus sign next to Turn off hard disks and set a lower time to stop your PC's hard drive.
Tip 5: Shut down desktop gadgets
Windows 7 and Vista lets you run useful mini-programs called Gadgets, such as weather tickers, directly from the desktop. Shutting them down can help your laptop battery last longer. In Windows Vista, right-click anywhere in the Sidebar (usually on the right of the screen) and select Close Sidebar. In Windows 7, close individual Gadgets by moving your mouse over a gadget and click the X that appears. To reinstate your Gadgets in Vista, right click the Sidebar icon in the Notification Area and select Open. In Windows 7, right-click the desktop and select Gadgets, then drag and drop them onto your desktop.

I have purchased 2 of these NX6120 batteries. They work exactly the same as the original hp compaq laptop batteries with one exception, they don't last as long as the originals. The first battery lasted for approximately one year. That's pretty good considering the very reasonable price.

Our Wifi/Wireless Radio consumes power when it receives and sends data over the network and we should turn it off when we’re not using it. We can turn off our wifi if our network card supports the enable and disable power control mechanism by using the ‘iwconfig’ command that we can execute in Ubuntu console:
sudo iwconfig wlan0 txpower off
Use the following command to turn our Wifi/Wireless on back again
sudo iwconfig wlan0 txpower on

Setting Relatime
We can disable the ‘atime’ to reduce disk write at the cost of breaking software that relies on ‘atime’. An alternative is to enable the ‘relatime’ option where Linux will update files access times only if they are earlier than the modification time. This change allows utilities to see if the current version of a file has been read, but still cuts down significantly on atime updates. Linux Kernel 2.6.20 and above should support the ‘relatime’ option

Enable Laptop Mode
We can save our battery energy life by turning on Linux’s laptop mode so that Linux reduce I/O operation when our laptop is under low power. Not every hardware comes with a laptop mode so we need to check whether our hardware supports laptop mode by executing the following command:
sudo gedit /proc/sys/vm/laptop_mode
If you find that the value in the laptop_mode text file is 0 it means that the laptop mode is disabled. Just set it to 5 from gedit and save the file to enable the laptop mode.

Intel introduce PowerTOP, a software that analyzes software’s power consumption.According to Intel PowerTOP work best with Linux kernel with the tickless idle (NO_HZ) feature enabled (version 2.6.21 or later). Currently, only 32-bit kernels have support for tickless idle; 64-bit kernels are expected to gain this feature in version 2.6.23.
You can install PowerTop through the Ubuntu Software Centre and run it by typing the following command from your console.
sudo powertop
“Wakeups per second” is a good indicator for our laptop energy consumption effeciency. Our laptop saves the most energy when the “Wakeups per second” shows a low number. According to Intel the lowest number of wakeups in a Gnome Desktop environment is 3 and we should be able to achieve this by tweaking our laptop hardware configuration or by closing some of the active software in our system.

According to PowerTOP analysis the main cause of wake up in my laptop is ‘Rescheduling Interrupt’ that is often invoked when my laptop tries to spread the processor activity across my dual Intel Centrino core. Rescheduling Interrupt happens when the kernel IPI “message” is sent to a sleeping core to wake it up from a low power sleep to make it start running a process when the scheduler decides to offload work from one core to another sleeping core.
One solution to minimize the interrupts is to install irqbalance that distributes the interrupts over the processors and cores in your computer system.

Or, more likely, you might be able to answer your email and delete some of the 200 spam messages that have arrived in the last 30 minutes. 1.Only run what you need. Keeping programs running in the background will require more system resources, and use more of the precious battery juice. Try to keep as few programs as possible open, and avoid programs that slow your computer down even at the best of times.
